The tour starts in Tangier. First, visit Cape Spartel and the Cave of Hercules. Then, cross the Rif Mountains and stroll through the blue city of Chefchaouen. Explore the Roman ruins of Volubilis and enjoy sightseeing in Meknes. Visit Ifrane, known as the Switzerland of Morocco, and the Cedar Forest. Ride camels and enjoy magical sunsets and sunrises in the Sahara Desert of Merzouga. Walk through the magnificent Todra and Dades Gorges. Visit historical Kasbahs and cross the High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass. Finally, the tour ends in Marrakech.
Day 1: Arrival in Tangier – Chefchaouen
On the first day of your 5-day desert tour itinerary, we pick you up from your accommodation, the airport, or the port in Tangier, also known as “the bride of the north.” The city is located in the northwest, where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Spartel. We begin by exploring this beautiful city, visiting the Cave of Hercules and Cape Spartel. Enjoy free time for lunch before driving inland to Chefchaouen, passing through the city of Tetouan and the Rif Mountains. Stops will be made for panoramic views. Overnight stay in a hotel in Chefchaouen.
Day 2: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fes
After breakfast, wander through the beautiful alleyways of Chefchaouen, known as the Blue City. Continue the 5-day desert tour by visiting the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site features stunning mosaics, ancient pillars, and archways. After exploring the ruins, drive 30 km to visit Meknes, an imperial city and the Ismaili capital. Visit Bab Al-Mansour, Sahrij Souani Basin, the Royal Stables, the Granary, and the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum. Head to Fes for an overnight stay in a riad.
Day 3: Fes – Ifrane – Cedar Forest – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga Sahara
After breakfast, drive south through Imouzzer to visit Ifrane, known for its low temperatures, snow, and alpine-style architecture. It’s often called the Switzerland of Morocco. Continue to the Cedar Forest, home to the Barbary macaques. Feel free to feed them while exploring the forest. Proceed to Midelt for a lunch break, then drive through the Tizi-n-Tilghmt pass and along the Ziz Valley, stopping for panoramic views. In the afternoon, arrive at the Sahara Desert of Merzouga. Switch to camels to cross the sandy desert, stopping atop a high dune to enjoy the sunset. Continue to the camp, which combines traditional nomadic tents with luxury hotel amenities. Enjoy Berber drum music and dance around the campfire under the starry sky. Accommodation at the camp.
Day 4: Merzouga Sahara – Rissani – Erfoud – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley
Waking up early to see the sunrise is a must. After breakfast, leave the desert to visit Rissani, the ancient capital of Tafilalet, which remains a major trading center with a lively souk on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. After exploring Rissani Souk, continue to Erfoud to visit a fossilized marble workshop. Drive through the Touroug and Tinjdad palm groves to reach the Todra Gorges, where the Todra River has carved a stunning canyon through the mountains. This high red cliff-sided canyon is ideal for rock climbers. Wander through the gorges and appreciate the landscape. Enjoy lunch in a restaurant, then continue to the Dades Valley via Boumalne Dades, stopping at the “monkey fingers” rock formations and a viewpoint overlooking the Dades Valley. Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel.
Day 5: Dades Valley – Rose Valley – Skoura Palm Groves – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Telouet – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech
After breakfast, continue to Kalaa Magouna to explore the Rose Valley, known for its annual Rose Festival in May. Discover local rose products, including perfumes, rose water, and oils. Drive through the Skoura palm groves and visit the Kasbah of Amredhyle. Reach Ouarzazate, where you can visit film studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. Depart to visit the iconic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featured in many films and TV series. Visit the Telouet Kasbah, then continue to Marrakech through the Tizi-n-Tichka pass and the High Atlas Mountains. Enjoy stops for lunch and photography at scenic spots. Finally, arrive in Marrakech and transfer to your accommodation in a riad. End of the 5-day Morocco tour.
